The Maritime Institute "Willem Barentsz": Introduction
The history of the institute dates back to 1875. Our name is derived from "Willem Barentsz", a gifted sailor, cartographer and explorer who was born on Terschelling.
In contrast to the situation at other nautical academies the way of life at the institute closely resembles that of the shipboard practice. During the first two years the cadets live with 150 fellow students in their own student campus.

The Maritime Institute "Willem Barentsz" has a four-year Ship’s Officer training programme which produces a maritime officer " male or female " who is qualified for the demands of the modern shipping industry. The training programme is developed in consultation with several shipping companies and is in compliance with the requirements and standards of international conventions and maritime practice. |
|
Graduates are entitled to the Dutch degree of "Ing." which is equivalent to Bachelor of Science and also qualify for the merchant navy certificates of competence according to STCW 95 for deck and engineer officers, both operational as well as managerial level upon acquiring seatime. Highly qualified ship’s officers are very much in demand for a job at sea and in addition our programme is considered to be a good preparation for a managerial position on shore. |
|
A special interest area is an electro laboratory were we have rebuilt the engineering components of a vessel on scale. All aspects of the electrical management of a ship are taught and practiced. Together with industry we have developed the newest set-up that could exist on a modern ship. |

Another unique feature is the simulator centre, which is an excellent preparation tool for nautical students. It is also the place where the crew of a shipping company can be trained or can prepare for new projects and where hydraulic dredging engineers have their own facilities.
Presently the centre comprises; a ship’s bridge simulator (360°) with additional facilities for trailing suction hopper dredger simulation, an engine room simulator, a liquid cargo handling simulator, a GMDSS - safety communication system " simulator, a ship’s bridge simulator (225°) with additional facilities for dynamic positioning and dynamic tracking and a radar navigation simulator with facilities for fast ferry training. Each of the systems can be run separately or integrated meaning the bridge, cargo handling and engine room simulators will function as a whole: the full mission ship simulator. |
|
Each year, about a thousand Dutch nautical students enroll for basic and advanced maritime simulator training. Moreover an increasing number of experienced seafarers participate through their shipping companies.
The training programmes have been designed according to international standards and are regularly modified. With assistance of the Technical University Delft, Marin and Kongsberg Norcontrol the simulators systems are kept on the highest level of sophistication. |
|
Developments in technology and new rules and regulations demand a continuous retraining of operational personnel. To this extent the Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz has developed a range of short courses, utilizing the expertise and facilities at hand.
The courses are offered to companies and to individuals and can be tailored to fit specific needs where required. On the opposite page a non-comprehensive list is given of the courses and course areas which are available. Separate data sheets with all particulars of the courses are available on request. |
